A Wee Bit Cold

While the East coast is getting hit with a big snowstorm, here in Toronto its cold. Like really cold. For the third time in three weeks its dipped into the -30’s with the windchill. For my American friends that’s about -22 Fahrenheit.  A week an a half ago it actually went below -40c (-40f).

While it was only -32 when we woke up this morning, we were greeted with frost on the inside of our front door.

Frost on Doorknob

Yep, that’s INSIDE THE HOUSE.

Yes, I know I live in Canada. Yes I know it gets cold here.

However Toronto usually doesn’t get this kind of cold. We are usually buffeted by the lake and get very little in the way of snowfall, and usually we are about 5 degrees warmer that other areas. Apparently Mother Nature decided to teach Torontonians a lesson this year, and show us what a real winter is like. (p.s. it’s a bitch)

So as you can imagine, we haven’t done much on the house in the last few weeks! We are working away on a lighting project that we hope to finish this week. We are bundling up on the sofa watching Klondike, and HGTV on repeat. The dog refuses to go out for walks, and wants to be underneath blankets at all times, and we had soup for dinner last night (I hate soup.)

Excuse me while I go drown my cold weary bones in hot hot coffee.

  1. I’m with you on the cold and I don’t know how you do it. I’m in California, where our lows are probably your highs! But I love the DIY journey you’re writing. It brings fond memories of my DIY life. When I was young, we lived in so many different types of places–the hippie/gypsie lifestyle–I’ve always thought about writing a book, or blog, but, alas, no pictures. Thanks for bringing back some of my favorite memories.

    1. That sounds like such an interesting adventure. You should totally write a book, even if you don’t have all the photos! What was the favorite place you ever lived?

  2. I hate, hate, hate, hate, hate winter. Especially this year. I’m in Milton, so not too far from Toronto and MY GOD I HATE WINTER SO MUCH. This year has been terrible for ice and snow and cold and I’m SICK OF IT! I start work at 5am most mornings and I always just want to curl up in a ball and stay in bed. 5am is COLD. Plus, whenever it *does* snow, like last night, Milton’s plowing SUCKS and the roads are always terrible. I’ve already been in one accident this year because THREE days after the second ice storm we got, the roads were still a sheet of ice. They blamed the salt not working in this cold. If they say to us ‘You’re Canadian, you should be used to this’… I say to them, YOU ARE CANADIAN TOO! YOU SHOULD HAVE A BETTER SOLUTION FOR THE ROADS BY NOW!

Seriously, can you tell how angry I am about winter this year?

    1. I love your rant Meredith! We are all feeling the exact same thing! We are really really lucky because we live on a main road, so we get plowed and salted usually fairly quickly. I feel so bad for people in the suburbs!
